When it comes to comfort food, few dishes can rival the classic baked potato. This versatile staple is not just a side dish; it's a canvas for countless flavors, toppings, and textures. Whether you enjoy it as a simple accompaniment to your main course or fully loaded with toppings, the perfect baked potato can elevate any meal.
Ingredients
Scale:
4 medium russet potatoes (about 8 ounces each)
Olive oil (about 1 tablespoon)
Coarse sea salt (for seasoning)
1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or your favorite blend)
½ cup sour cream or Greek yogurt
½ cup cooked bacon, crumbled
¼ cup chopped green onions or chives
1 cup steamed broccoli (for a healthier option)
¼ cup ranch dressing
Garlic powder and freshly cracked black pepper (for seasoning)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
Scrub the russet potatoes thoroughly under cold water to remove any dirt. Pat them dry with a clean towel.
Use a fork to pierce each potato several times. This allows steam to escape during baking and prevents them from bursting.
Rub each potato with olive oil, ensuring they are evenly coated. Then, sprinkle coarse sea salt generously over the skin.
Place the seasoned potatoes directly on the oven rack or on a baking sheet. Bake for about 45-60 minutes, or until the skins are crispy and a fork easily pierces the flesh. Flip the potatoes halfway through for even cooking.
After 45 minutes, check the potatoes by inserting a fork into the center. If it slides in easily, they are done; if not, continue baking and check every 5 minutes until tender.
While the potatoes are baking, prepare your desired toppings. Cook and crumble bacon, shred cheese, chop green onions, or steam your broccoli.
Once the potatoes are done, remove them from the oven. Let them cool for a few minutes, then make a lengthwise slit in the top of each potato and gently squeeze the ends to fluff the insides. Add your favorite toppings.
