Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add chopped cabbage and blanch for 3 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet over medium heat, add a splash of olive oil. Once hot, add diced onions and minced garlic. Cook until the onions are translucent, about 5 minutes.
  4. Add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook until browned and fully cooked through. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  5. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked cabbage, browned meat, diced tomatoes (with juice), uncooked rice, broth, oregano, paprika, salt, and pepper. Stir until evenly mixed.
  6. Pour the mixture into a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, spreading it evenly.
  7. Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the top. If using, add the breadcrumbs for extra crunch.
  8. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, until bubbly and golden brown.
  9. Allow the casserole to rest for about 10 minutes before serving.
