Description
This recipe provides an easy solution to recreate the light and crunchy texture of the signature batter used for fried fish at Long John Silver’s.
Ingredients
Scale:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup cornmeal
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- Optional: a pinch of cayenne pepper
- 1 cup cold water (or beer)
- 1 large egg
- Vegetable oil or peanut oil for frying
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and paprika.
- Create a well in the center of the dry ingredient mix and add the cold water (or beer) and the egg. Stir gently until just combined.
- In a deep frying pan or a heavy-bottomed pot, heat about 2 inches of oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- Cut your fish fillets into smaller pieces. Dip each piece into the batter, ensuring they are well-coated.
- Carefully place the battered fish into the hot oil, working in batches. Fry for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until golden brown and crispy.
- Serve the fried fish hot with your favorite dipping sauce, such as tartar sauce or malt vinegar.
