A hearty casserole that combines all the elements of a traditional Southern breakfast into a delightful dish perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients
Scale:
1 pound of breakfast sausage
1 can (16.3 ounces) of refrigerated flaky biscuits
4 large eggs
2 cups of milk
1 teaspoon of black pepper
1/2 teaspoon of salt (adjust to taste)
1 teaspoon of garlic powder
1/4 cup of all-purpose flour
2 cups of milk (for the gravy)
1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon of dried thyme (optional)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
In a large skillet over medium heat, crumble and cook the sausage until browned and fully cooked, about 8-10 minutes. Drain excess grease if necessary.
Sprinkle the flour over the cooked sausage, stirring to coat evenly. Gradually whisk in 2 cups of milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce, black pepper, and thyme (if using). Cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
While the gravy thickens, open the can of biscuits and cut each biscuit into quarters. Spread the biscuit pieces evenly across the bottom of a greased 9x13-inch baking dish.
Pour the sausage gravy evenly over the biscuit pieces.
In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, and garlic powder until well combined. Pour this mixture over the gravy layer in the baking dish.
