This hearty dish captures the essence of rustic homestead meals, combining savory ground beef and rich, creamy gravy served over crispy toast. It’s the kind of meal that feels like a warm hug on a cold day.
Ingredients
Scale:
1 pound ground beef
1 medium onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 cups beef broth (preferably low sodium)
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Salt and pepper to taste
1 tablespoon olive oil
4 slices of hearty bread (like sourdough or whole grain)
Butter for spreading
Instructions
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for about 3–4 minutes or until translucent, stirring occasionally to ensure even cooking.
Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute, ensuring it becomes fragrant but doesn’t burn.
Add the ground beef to the skillet. Break it apart with a spatula and cook until browned, approximately 5–7 minutes. Drain any excess fat if necessary.
Sprinkle the flour over the cooked beef and mix well to combine. Cook for 2 minutes, stirring continuously.
Gradually pour in the beef broth while stirring continuously to prevent lumps. Add the Worcestershire sauce and season with salt and pepper.
Bring the mixture to a simmer, allowing it to thicken for about 5–10 minutes.
While the gravy simmers, preheat your oven or toaster oven to 400°F (200°C). Spread butter on each slice of bread and place them on a baking sheet.
Bake the bread for about 5–7 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
Once the toast is ready, top each slice generously with the creamy beef gravy. Serve immediately.
