Ingredients
Scale:
16 ounces of fresh button or cremini mushrooms, cleaned and trimmed.
1 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour for a gluten-free option).
1 teaspoon garlic powder.
1 teaspoon onion powder.
1 teaspoon paprika.
Salt and pepper to taste.
1 cup buttermilk (or a non-dairy substitute for vegan fried mushrooms).
2 cups breadcrumbs (Panko for extra crunch, or gluten-free breadcrumbs).
Vegetable oil (canola, sunflower, or peanut oil) for deep frying.
Instructions
Clean the mushrooms by wiping them with a damp cloth. Trim the stems if needed, ensuring they are uniform in size for even cooking.
In one bowl, combine the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. In a second bowl, pour the buttermilk. In a third bowl, place the breadcrumbs.
Take each mushroom, dip it first into the flour mixture, then into the buttermilk, and finally into the breadcrumbs, pressing the breadcrumbs onto the mushroom.
In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat enough oil to cover the mushrooms (about 2 inches deep) to 350°F (175°C).
Carefully lower the breaded mushrooms into the hot oil in batches. Fry for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried mushrooms from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels.
Transfer the crispy fried mushrooms to a serving platter and serve immediately with your choice of dipping sauce.
