There’s something incredibly nostalgic and satisfying about a Fried Bologna Sandwich. This classic American lunch staple evokes memories of childhood, often enjoyed on lazy afternoons.
Ingredients
Scale:
4 slices of bologna (preferably thick-cut for added texture)
2 slices of bread (white or whole wheat work well, though sourdough can add a lovely tang)
2 tablespoons of butter or margarine (use unsalted for better control over seasoning)
1 slice of cheese (American, cheddar, or your choice; American melts beautifully)
Lettuce leaves (for crunch and freshness)
Slices of tomato (for juiciness and flavor)
Mustard, mayo, or your favorite sandwich spread (to enhance the taste)
Sliced pickles or jalapeños (for a kick of acidity and heat)
Instructions
Spread butter or margarine on one side of each slice of bread.
Place a skillet over medium heat and allow it to warm for about 2 minutes.
Add the bologna slices to the skillet and fry for about 2-3 minutes on one side until they begin to brown and crisp up.
Flip the bologna slices over and, if using, add a slice of cheese on top. Fry for another 2 minutes.
Remove the bologna and cheese from the skillet and place on the unbuttered side of one slice of bread. Layer your desired toppings and condiments, then top with the other slice of bread.
Wipe the skillet to remove excess grease. Place the assembled sandwich in the skillet, buttered side down. Grill for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown. Flip the sandwich carefully and grill the other side for an additional 3-4 minutes.
Once both sides are crispy and golden brown, remove the sandwich from the skillet. Allow it to cool slightly before slicing it in half and serving.
