Fried Cabbage with Onions and Bacon is more than just a side dish; it’s a comforting staple that has found its way into kitchens across the South and beyond. This dish beautifully marries the earthy sweetness of cabbage with the savory crunch of crispy bacon, all elevated by the rich flavor of caramelized onions. The combination results in a dish that is deeply satisfying and incredibly flavorful.
Ingredients
Scale:
1 medium head of green cabbage, chopped (about 6 cups)
1 large onion, thinly sliced
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
6 slices of thick-cut bacon, chopped
Salt and pepper, to taste
Optional: 1 teaspoon garlic powder or minced garlic
Instructions
In a large skillet over medium heat, add the chopped bacon. Cook it until it’s crispy and browned, about 8-10 minutes. Transfer the cooked bacon to a paper towel-lined plate, leaving the bacon fat in the skillet.
In the same skillet, add the sliced onions to the bacon fat and sauté for about 5-7 minutes until the onions are soft and caramelized.
Increase the heat to medium-high and add the chopped cabbage, stirring well to combine with the onions and bacon fat. Cook until the cabbage starts to soften, about 3-4 minutes.
Season the cabbage with salt, pepper, and garlic powder (if using), stirring to coat evenly.
Continue cooking the cabbage for 10-15 minutes, stirring frequently, until tender but still crunchy.
Return the crispy bacon to the skillet and toss everything together for a minute to combine the flavors. Serve hot.
