Italian fried mozzarella sandwiches, a beloved street food that encapsulates the heart of Italian comfort food with crispy, golden-brown exterior and gooey, melted mozzarella filling.
Ingredients
Scale:
8 slices of rustic bread (preferably Italian or sourdough)
8 ounces of fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced
2 large eggs
1 cup of all-purpose flour
1 cup of breadcrumbs (preferably Italian-style)
Salt and pepper to taste
Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
Prepare the Ingredients: Lay out your ingredients on a clean surface. Slice the mozzarella into 1/4-inch thick pieces and set aside.
Assemble the Sandwiches: Place one slice of bread on a clean cutting board. Top with a slice of mozzarella, season with salt and pepper, and place another slice of bread on top. Repeat for the remaining slices.
Breading the Sandwiches: In a shallow bowl, whisk the eggs. Dip each sandwich in flour, then egg mixture, and finally coat with breadcrumbs. Press down gently to adhere.
Heat the Oil: In a skillet, pour enough vegetable oil to cover the bottom by 1/2 inch. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it shimmers.
Fry the Sandwiches: Carefully place 2-3 sandwiches in the hot oil and fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown.
Drain and Serve: Transfer the sandwiches to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Allow them to cool slightly before cutting in half.
