Patty melts are the quintessential comfort food that invokes nostalgia and satisfaction in every bite. This classic dish combines juicy, seasoned ground beef with the gooey goodness of melted cheese, all nestled between two golden slices of bread. What sets this recipe apart is the secret sauce that adds an extra layer of flavor and richness, elevating it far beyond the average burger.
Ingredients
Scale:
1 pound ground beef (80/20)
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
Salt and pepper to taste
8 slices of rye or Texas toast bread
4 slices of Swiss cheese
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 cup caramelized onions
½ cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons ketchup
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 tablespoon dill pickle relish
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
Make the Secret Sauce: In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, ketchup, yellow mustard, dill pickle relish, Worcestershire sauce, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Stir until well mixed. Cover and refrigerate.
Caramelize the Onions: Heat a skillet over medium-low heat and add 1 tablespoon of butter. Slice 1 medium onion thinly and add to the skillet. Cook for 15-20 minutes until caramelized.
Prepare the Beef Patties: In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently and form into 4 equal-sized patties.
Cook the Patties: In the same skillet, add more butter over medium-high heat. Cook the beef patties for 4-5 minutes on each side until browned and cooked to your desired doneness.
Assemble the Patty Melts: Spread the secret sauce on one side of each slice of bread. Layer the melted patties topped with caramelized onions, then place another slice of bread on top.
Grill the Sandwiches: In the same skillet, add more butter and reduce the heat to medium. Cook the sandwiches for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown.
Slice and Serve: Remove the patty melts from the skillet and let them rest for a minute. Slice in half diagonally and serve warm with extra secret sauce on the side.
