A classic American sandwich that combines a juicy beef patty, creamy cheese, caramelized onions, and a flavorful secret sauce, all grilled to perfection.
Ingredients
Scale:
1 pound ground beef (80% lean recommended)
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
4 slices of rye bread or Texas toast
4 slices of Swiss cheese
1 medium onion, sliced
2 tablespoons butter
½ cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons ketchup
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon pickle relish
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
Prepare the Secret Sauce: In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, ketchup, Dijon mustard, pickle relish, garlic powder, onion powder, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix well until it's smooth and creamy. Set aside.
Cook the Caramelized Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, add 1 tablespoon of butter. Once melted, add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for about 15-20 minutes until golden brown and soft. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
Form the Patties: In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Gently mix until just combined and form into two equal-sized patties, about ¾ inch thick.
Cook the Patties: In the same skillet, heat a little oil over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side until reaching your desired doneness.
Melt the Cheese: Place a slice of cheese on top of each patty during the last minute of cooking and cover the skillet with a lid to melt the cheese.
Assemble the Patty Melts: Butter one side of each slice of bread. On the unbuttered side, spread the secret sauce, place a patty, add caramelized onions, top with cheese, and place another slice of bread, buttered side up.
Grill the Sandwiches: In the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium and grill the sandwiches until golden brown on both sides.
