There's something incredibly comforting about a plate of Salisbury steak paired with creamy garlic mashed potatoes and rich mushroom gravy. This classic American dish combines the heartiness of ground beef with the velvety texture of mashed potatoes, making it a go-to for family dinners and weeknight meals alike.
Ingredients
Scale:
1 pound ground beef (80% lean)
1/4 cup breadcrumbs
1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
1 large egg
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
2 cups beef broth
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional)
1 teaspoon thyme, dried
2 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and cubed
1/2 cup milk
4 cloves garlic, minced
4 tablespoons butter
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each into an oval patty, about 1/2 inch thick.
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add a splash of oil, then carefully place the patties in the skillet. Cook for about 5-6 minutes on each side.
In the same skillet, add butter and let it melt. Add the sliced mushrooms and sauté until golden brown, about 5 minutes. Stir in the beef broth and soy sauce.
If you prefer a thicker gravy, mix the cornstarch with a little water to create a slurry. Stir this into the simmering gravy and cook until it thickens, about 2-3 minutes.
While the gravy simmers, bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Add the cubed potatoes and cook until tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot.
Add the milk, minced garlic, and butter to the drained potatoes. Mash until creamy, then season with salt and pepper to taste.
Plate the Salisbury steak topped with the mushroom gravy alongside garlic mashed potatoes.
