This dish perfectly marries the rich flavors of macaroni and cheese with succulent shrimp, creating a satisfying meal that’s both indulgent and comforting.
Ingredients
Scale:
8 ounces elbow macaroni
1 pound medium shrimp, peeled and deveined
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon paprika
Salt and pepper, to taste
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
3 cups milk (whole or 2% works best)
2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 cup panko breadcrumbs
1/4 cup melted butter
1/2 teaspoon paprika (for garnish)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking your baked shrimp mac.
In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook the elbow macaroni according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 7-8 minutes. Drain and set aside.
In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 4 tablespoons of butter. Add the shrimp, season with garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Cook for 3-4 minutes, or until the shrimp are pink and cooked through. Remove from heat and set aside.
In the same skillet, reduce the heat to low and add the remaining butter. Once melted, whisk in the flour until smooth, cooking for about 1 minute to form a roux.
Slowly whisk in the milk, ensuring to eliminate any lumps. Increase heat to medium and cook until the sauce thickens, approximately 5-7 minutes, stirring frequently.
Once thickened, stir in the cheddar, Gruyère, and Parmesan cheeses until melted and creamy. Add the Dijon mustard and Worcestershire sauce for added flavor. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked macaroni, shrimp, and cheese sauce, mixing until well combined.
Transfer the mixture to a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, spreading evenly.
In a small bowl, mix panko breadcrumbs with melted butter and sprinkle over the macaroni mixture. Dust with paprika for a pop of color.
Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.
Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving, letting the flavors meld.
