Description
A hearty and comforting dish that has been a staple in many American households for generations.
Ingredients
Scale:
- 1 pound of noodles (preferably homemade or egg noodles)
- 1/2 cup of lard (or vegetable shortening as a substitute)
- 1 large onion, diced
- 3 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
- 2 cups of chicken broth
- 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons of butter (optional)
Instructions
- In a large skillet, melt the lard over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook until it's translucent and starting to caramelize, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute, stirring constantly to prevent burning.
- Add the flour and stir to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes, or until the mixture forms a smooth paste.
- Slowly add the chicken broth, whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until it thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
- While the sauce is cooking, cook the noodles according to the package instructions. Drain and set aside.
- In the slow cooker, combine the cooked noodles, sauce, and diced onion mixture. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Cook the mixture on low for 2-3 hours, or until the noodles are tender and the sauce has thickened.
- Serve the dish hot, garnished with chopped fresh herbs or a sprinkle of grated cheese.
