In a mixing bowl, combine the hulled and halved fresh strawberries, 1/4 cup sugar, cornstarch, and vanilla extract. Gently toss until the strawberries are well coated. Let the mixture sit for about 15 minutes to allow the juices to release.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. In another bowl, mix the milk, melted butter, and egg until well combined.
