American goulash is a classic one-pot meal combining tender elbow macaroni, savory ground beef, and a tangy tomato sauce, all infused with spices for a comforting and hearty dish.
Ingredients
Scale:
2 cups elbow macaroni
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 tablespoon paprika
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder (optional)
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 pound ground beef
1 large onion, chopped
1 bell pepper, chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 cups tomato sauce
1 cup beef broth
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes (optional)
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Fresh parsley, chopped
Chopped green onions
Instructions
In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, until browned and no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.
Add the chopped onion and bell pepper to the pot. Sauté until the vegetables are softened and the onion is translucent, approximately 5 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
Stir in the tomato sauce, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, paprika, oregano, and garlic powder. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. If using diced tomatoes, add them in at this stage.
Add the elbow macaroni to the pot, ensuring the pasta is submerged in the liquid. Cover the pot and cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pasta is al dente and has absorbed most of the liquid.
Remove the pot from heat. If using, sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese on top and cover for a few minutes to allow the cheese to melt. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.
