A delightful dish that embodies the essence of traditional American desserts, featuring tender apples enveloped in a subtly spiced sauce, topped with a buttery biscuit-like crust.
Ingredients
Scale:
6 medium-sized apples (preferably Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1 tablespoon lemon juice
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into cubes
1/2 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin wedges. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples with 1/2 cup of sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss until the apples are well coated, and let them sit for about 10 minutes.
Spread the apple mixture evenly in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Dot the apples with small pieces of butter.
In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, 1/4 cup of sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Stir in the milk and vanilla extract into the dry mixture until just combined.
Spoon the batter over the apple filling, spreading it gently.
Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown.
Once baked, remove the Apple Pan Dowdy from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving.
