CROCKPOT CUBE STEAK & GRAVY is a dish that embodies the essence of comfort food, evoking nostalgic memories of family gatherings and hearty dinners. This recipe transforms humble cube steak into a succulent meal, simmered slowly in a rich, savory gravy that seeps into every bite. With roots in Southern cooking, cube steak is traditionally pounded beef that is both tender and full of flavor, making it a satisfying choice for meat lovers.
Ingredients
Scale:
1.5 pounds cube steak, cut into portions for even cooking
Salt, to taste, preferably kosher salt for better flavor
Pepper, to taste, freshly ground for enhanced aroma
2 tablespoons olive oil, or vegetable oil as a substitute
1 packet of brown gravy mix, for convenience
1 cup beef broth, homemade for the best depth of flavor
1 medium onion, sliced into rings or half-moons for texture
8 ounces mushrooms, sliced (optional), for added earthiness
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, which adds a savory depth
2 cloves garlic, minced, to infuse pungent flavor
Instructions
Season the cube steak with salt and pepper on both sides, ensuring even coverage for maximum flavor.
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the cube steak and sear each side for 3-4 minutes until browned.
Transfer the seared cube steak to your slow cooker, placing it in a single layer for even cooking.
In the same skillet, add the sliced onion and mushrooms (if using). Sauté for 5 minutes, or until the onions are translucent and the mushrooms are tender.
Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes, until fragrant.
In a bowl, whisk together the brown gravy mix, beef broth, and Worcestershire sauce until well combined. Pour this mixture over the steak in the slow cooker.
Add the sautéed onion and mushroom mixture on top of the steak.
Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours, until the cube steak is tender.
If you desire a thicker gravy, mix 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of cold water and stir it into the gravy. Let it cook on high for an additional 15-20 minutes until thickened.
